High surf warning in effect, surf could reach 25 feet

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A high surf warning is in effect for the north and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and for north-facing shores of Maui, according to the Department of Emergency Management.

A high surf advisory is also in effect for west facing shores of Maui.

A powerful Northwest swell will build through tonight, and peak by Friday, producing hazardous surf along exposed north and west facing shores.

High Surf Warning in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. 

The High Surf Advisory is no longer in effect.

  • Surf: along north and west facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and along north facing shores of Oahu Molokai and Maui. 20 to 25. Along West facing shores of Oahu and Molokai, 15 to 20 feet.

  • Timing: spreading from Kauai to Oahu and Maui County this afternoon and tonight.

  • Impacts: High, expect Ocean Water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong Longshore and Rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
