Short game key to Darton's aim for 12th straight region title

It's been quite some time since the Darton State Cavaliers weren't the golf region champions, 11 years to be exact.

But if the Cavs want to make it 12 straight next week in Tifton, Head Coach Bill Jones knows it's going to take a team improvement on the greens.

"We had our tournament win at Doublegate and we didn't putt very well. And then we went to the Goose Pond, and we didn't putt very well," he says of the Cavs' last two tournaments. "So we knew what our weakness is leading into region and that's what we're focusing on. We just have to make sure we can get the ball in the hole a little quicker."

Players said after returning from a 5th place finish at Goose Pond, the team spent nearly all week on the putting greens.

Jones says it was all about boosting the team's confidence when putting.

One area the Cavs don't need a confidence boost in is their readiness for the Region Championship.

Sophomore Nick Green says he doesn't expect the team's dominance over this tournament ending any time soon.

"We definitely don't want to be the first team to lose region in that long. That would be terrible," Green says. "We're so much better than that. I mean, really, we haven't really thought about it because we're so much better than these other teams. We just have to go out there and prove it."

The Region Tournament is April 7-9 at the Golf Club of South Georgia in Tifton.
