Ka'anapali beaches closed following shark attack

WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Wednesday Update:

Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, in cooperation with County lifeguards reopened a two mile section of Kaanapali coastal between Black Rock and Honokowai park today at noon following assessments this morning that showed no further shark sightings.

A 58-year-old man visiting from Marina Del Rey, California was bitten by a shark Tuesday morning, in waters fronting 110 Ka'anapali Shores Place, officials say.

The incident was reported at around 8:30 a.m. Surfers were evacuated from the water and the beach is closed for a mile in both directions from the area where the shark bite took place.

Maui officials say the victim suffered two deep lacerations on the right thigh, above the knee.

When asked to describe the shark the victim said the shark's head was the size of a basketball. Surfers in the water said they saw a gray, four-foot long shark in the area of the attack. Lifeguards believe this to be a reef shark.

The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Ocean Safety is patrolling the beach, from Black Rock to Honokowai, and warning people to stay out of the water. The beach will remain closed until noon tomorrow.
