Local Connection: Beach Smoking Ban

At first blush, it seems impractical for the city council to want to ban smoking at a number of public beaches, including Sandy Beach Park, Kapiolani Park, a portion of Ala Moana Beach Park as well as some others.

We are talking about the great outdoors, after all, and what police officer has the time to enforce it when so many other pressing and more serious crimes are out there?

The more we thought about it, though, we have come to the conclusion that this is a pretty good idea. Just as the movement spread to ban smoking in restaurants and bars, this is another move that sends the message that we need to do away with any practice that annoys and harms the health of others.

Violators would face a $100 fine for the first infraction, $200 for the second and $500 subsequent violations.

Even if it cannot be enforced all that often, it gives non-smokers the potential benefit that they need to not be bothered by cigarette smoke and cigarette butts that litter the beach.

Anything we can do to continue our assault on smoking is worth trying and this is a good step towards better health and cleaner air.
