HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Guests and employees at a Maui restaurant were evacuated late Wednesday night after a fire broke out atop the building's roof and in its attic, according to Maui Fire Department officials.

The fire, which reportedly caused around $600,000 in damage, was first reported at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Fire crews say that upon arrival at The Plantation House Restaurant, they found a 5′ x 5′ section of the roof on fire, as was a section of the attic.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 10:30 p.m., and extinguished by about 1 a.m. on Thursday.

Maui Fire Dept. Chief Lee Mainaga says that the estimated damages to the structure were $500,000, and damage to the building's contents was $100,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
