HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Lion King is set to roar once again in Hawaii! Governor Abercrombie and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced Tuesday morning that the famed Disney Broadway musical will return for an eight week run starting January 14, 2014.

More than 180,000 tickets were sold in 2007 when the Lion King performed at the Neal Blaisdell Center during their three-month period, and grossed close to $15 million.

The City and County of Honolulu estimates that 120,000 tickets will be sold during the 2014 tour, and that the show will bring millions into the local economy.

"The message of the Lion King is all too pertinent to what the values are here in Hawaii of our diversity defining us, of being brothers and sisters to one another, of being generous and open hearted with one another," Abercrombie said.

Jack Lucas, President of Tickets West and West Coast Entertainment, also announced that the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii and the military of Hawaii will have a special opportunity to purchase tickets to the first Lion King performance for a price of $25.

"The Lion King is another example of tying Hawaii together with Disney and all the good that comes with it," Caldwell said. "This production is about making our life richer, and we're really grateful to have Disney here."

Group tickets will be available for purchase on Thursday March 28 at the Hawaii Opera Theater for those looking to purchase ten or more tickets. Single tickets will not be available for purchase until later this summer.

The Lion King is currently in its 16th year on Broadway and is the 5th longest running show in Broadway history.

Ticket Information:

Opening night is set for Thursday, January 16 at 7:30pm.  Individual tickets for The Lion King will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, July 20, 2013

Beginning Thursday, March 28, groups of ten (10) or more will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets by calling 808.593.9468.  Additionally, Premium Ticket Packages are available which include a prime seat location, a commemorative souvenir program and an exclusive merchandise item.
