IRVINE, Calif. – (Hawaii Athletics) University of Hawai‘i Rainbow pitcher Matt Cooper has been named the Big West Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week. It was UH's first Big West player or pitcher weekly honor of the season.
Cooper has been lights out on the mound and comes into this week's series against UC Santa Barbara with a team-best 1.53 ERA. He guided UH to its first home victory with a three-hit shutout of Gonzaga (Mar. 12) then worked 7.2 scoreless innings on Saturday in Hawai‘i's blanking of Wichita State.
The right-hander produced a career-high 10 strikeouts in his Wichita State start and is riding a streak of 16.2 straight scoreless innings. In the friendly confines of Les Murakami Stadium, he has allowed just one run in 28.2 innings pitched.
The Rainbows play their first-ever Big West games this week when they host the Gauchos for four games at Les Murakami Stadium. The series kicks off Friday, Mar. 28, at 6:35 p.m.
