BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A woman has died from injuries she sustained after getting hit by a car on the Big Island Saturday night.
The incident happened after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road and Pukihae Street in Hilo.
The 53-year-old victim was fronting a crosswalk using a walker on the westside shoulder of the road when she was hit by a 2005 Kia four-door sedan traveling south. The Kia was driven by a 37-year-old Volcano man.
Fire Rescue crews transported the woman to the Hilo Medical Center where she later died at 11:58 p.m.
The driver of the Kia and his 3-year-old son were not injured.
Hawaii police have launched a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
It is unknown if speed, alcohol, or drugs were involved.
This is the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to seven at the same time last year.
