HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - By Paolo DiGiovanni
Since its opening in August 2012, more than 2,000 passengers on the bus pass through the Alapai Transit Center each day. It is a major transfer point for The Bus. However, there were no public restrooms in the area.
The center is set to open their new public restrooms Saturday, March 16. The Bus opened their employee restrooms to the public due to the amount of traffic that goes through the area.
"Ever since the Alapai Transit Center opened bus riders have had to hunt for places to use the restroom," said Mayor Caldwell. "Sometimes they missed their bus. The walk could be too far for seniors. There were limited options early in the morning or late at night. I felt that this had to stop."
Although maintenance for the restrooms is not free, Mayor Caldwell believes it is "the kind of service a city should provide". The restrooms will be open from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily.
