UH Water Polo improves to 2-0 in Big West play

LONG BEACH, Calif. (HawaiiAthletics) - The No. 8 University of Hawaii women's water polo team moved to 2-0 in the Big West with a 12-7 victory over No. 9 Long Beach State Friday afternoon at Campus Pool.

One day after winning an overtime thriller in their Big West debut at UC Irvine-handing the Anteaters its first league loss in three years-the Rainbow Wahine were again victorious, though with a little more breathing room.

Monika Eggens  led the way with another dominating performance, accounting for half the team's offensive production with six goals. It was the senior's ninth hat trick in 14 matches this year. Emily Carr (3) also notched a hat trick, while Danielle Lewis added a pair of scores.   UH improved to 9-5 overall with its third straight win. In the process the Rainbow Wahine snapped Long Beach State's (17-3, 0-1 Big West) 14-match win streak.

Hawaii got off to a fast start, scoring on its very first two possessions. That set the tone for the day as UH led from wire-to-wire. UH took a 7-3 lead at the half. LBSU cut the deficit to 7-4 early in the third quarter, but the Rainbow Wahine reeled off the next four goals to take a commanding 11-4 in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.   Amy Carlson put together another solid showing in the cage for UH, recording a season-high 10 saves.

The Rainbow Wahine will now take a break from league action with an appearance in the Aztec Invitational on the campus of San Diego State on March 16-17. UH will take on Indiana, Princeton and Bucknell.
