Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball opens season with win

Queens Beach, Waikiki (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team opened up their 2013 campaign on a winning note, claiming a 3-2 team victory over Florida International University.

Leading the way for UH was the pair of Jane Croson and Ashley Kastl who defeated FIU's Emily Podschweit and Tina Toghyani 21-16, 21-19. Croson is the only returning UH player with NCAA post season experience.

Alyssa Longo and Karlee Riggs picked up another point for UH after beating Camila Rosado and Elly Citron 21-11, 21-17, while Kuulei Zalopany and Olivia Urban put UH over the top with a 21-17, 21-12 win over Jessica Mendoza and Laura Duffy.

FIU picked up a pair of team points in the days final two matches with Kate Stepanova and Ksenia Sukhareva defeating the duo of Ginger Long and Katie Spieler 21-16, 21-13. Jessica Gehrke and Maryna Samoday picked up a win over Hawaii's Natasha Bell and Tai Manu-Olevao 21-15, 21-18.

Hawaii closes out it's only home stand of the season by hosting their own tournament Saturday beginning at 7:30am and running all day. Rounding out the field are FIU, Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific University.
