Homes evacuated surrounding gas leak in McCully area

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A water main broke in McCully Thursday morning, also resulting in a related ruptured gas line.

The incident happened just after 7 a.m. on Pumehana Street between Fern Street and Lime Street. Gas was seen bubbling up as it reached the surface of the water from the main break.

The Board of Water Supply says the 8-inch main break on Pumehana Street is affecting eight customers. Avoid the area as Pumehana Street is closed between Fern Street and Lime Street.

Three homes and two condos surrounding the ruptured gas line were evacuated for about an hour while crews worked to shut off the gas.

The gas company was able to secure the scene and turn off the gas line just before 9 a.m.

No injuries have been reported.
