KANE'OHE, O'ahu (HawaiiAthletics) - The University of Hawai'i women's golf team completed the 28th Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational with its best finish of the season, Wednesday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on Marines Base Corps Hawai'i. As a team, UH totaled 926 after firing a 315 on Wednesday.
The 926 was the team's best 54-hole score of the season and third Top 10. UH also set a season-best with a 302 in Tuesday's second round and had its best 36-hole score (611).
In addition, senior Ka'ili Britos placed eighth after a final round 76. For the three rounds, the Honolulu native shot rounds of 74, 71, and 76 and finished eight shots behind the winner Manon Gidali of Arizona. Britos started the day four strokes off the lead but fell out of contention after a double bogey on No. 10, her seventh hole of the day, to drop to 3-over for the tournament.
Britos, who was looking to become UH's first individual champion since Dale Gammie during the 2006-07 season, completed UH's seventh tournament this season as its top finisher. The eighth place finish was her best of the season and seventh Top 10 of her career.
Seventh-ranked Arizona ran away with the team title with an 875 total while No. 45 Ohio State was runner-up at 900. The individual title came down to the 17th hole where Gidali birdied and Ohio State's Amy Meier parred to take a one stroke lead. On the final hole, Gidali parred while Meier bogeyed. Gidali finished the tournament at 3-under 213.
Also competing for UH were freshman Nichole Cruz (79-74-79=232/t28th), junior Liana Otake (79-76-82=237/t44th), senior Megan Inouye (78-81-80=239/t50th), and junior Charlee Kapiioho (78-82-80=240/t56th).
The Rainbow Wahine will next host the 'Anuenue Spring Break Classic, March 25-27 at Kapalua's Bay Course on Maui.
