LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - A humpback whale has been freed of line that was wrapped around its tail.
Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says the male humpback was spotted by a tour vessel on Friday off Lahaina. The line had wrapped several times around the animal and was cutting into him.
The Maui News says a response team was launched and removed some of the line, including about 40 feet of trailing line. A satellite tag buoy was attached to the animal. On Monday, the whale was relocated between Kahoolawe and Lanai, and all the entangling gear was removed.
The sanctuary says only three humpback whales have been reported and confirmed entangled this season. That is a third of what is typically reported by this time of the season.
