IRVINE, Calif. – (Hawaii Athletics) The 2012
academic all-Big West awards were announced and Dmytro Kovalyov and Kelly Majam
were named the University of Hawai‘i's Big West Conference Male and Female
Scholar Athletes of the Year.
Kovalyov, a senior member of
the Warrior mens tennis team, earned first team all-conference honors in
doubles and second team all-conference honors in singles during the 2012
season. He trained at the Barcelona Total Tennis Academy and has competed in
International Tennis Federation events across the globe. Kovalyov is a member
of the International Business Organization and a Salvation Army volunteer. An
International Business, Finance and Human Resource Management major, he hopes
to play tennis professionally and pursue a master of business administration.
Majam, a Health &
Physical Education major, is a senior centerfielder for the Rainbow Wahine
softball team. During 2012, she broke the UH career home run record in only her
junior season. She earned all-conference honors three times and was named NFCA
all-region twice in her career. She is a member of Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship and serves as a motivational speaker in the local community. She
hopes to take her softball career to the professional ranks and one day become
a high school teacher and a coach at the high school or collegiate level.
