Posted: Updated:

(Hawaii News Now) - Organizers of The Hapalua, Hawaii's half marathon, say that the current world record holder in the marathon, Patrick Makau of Kenya, has agreed to terms and will participate in the race on March 10.

The 27-year-old Makau, who averaged 4 minutes and 43 seconds a mile over 26.2 miles while setting the world record of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 38 seconds in Berlin in 2011, will have a special role in the local race.

Hawaii's top runners will be given  head starts on Makau that will range from 7 minutes to 25 minutes. They will try to hold him off to win a prize purse worth $11,000. It will be the first time that the word record holder has chased amateur distance runners for prize money.

It will also be the first time that a current world record holder has ever run in a Hawaii foot race.
