It was like climbing out of a never ending whole for the Wilcox Co. boy's basketball team in Macon on Thursday. The Patriots fought hard but couldn't overcome its missed opportunities before losing to Wilkinson Co. 63-59 in the Class A Public state championship.
Makail Grace scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a losing effort. The last state championship for Wilcox Co. was back in 1968.
"You know, I'm not going to ever- never ever- let one game ruin a season. Whenever you go 23 and five, and you end up playing for the big boy, there's nothing to be ashamed of." Said Patriots head coach George Kennedy.
Meanwhile, in the Class A Public girl's final the Randolph-Clay girl's started off the day with sort of a bad omen. The Lady Devils were forced to play its game against Gordon Lee in the Jones Co. purple uniform because Randolph-Clay only brought its white jerseys thinking it was the home team. In fact, Gordon Lee was the home team.
Randolph-Clay fell 61-56. Head coach Jennifer Acree reflected on what was an incomplete finish to a wonderful season.
Acree said "The second half we showed why we were ranked number one in the state all year long. When you dig yourself a hole like that in the first half, it's hard to get out of."
The Lady Red Devils finished the season 29-3.
