Westwood honors state champs

CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -

The Westwood girls basketball team feels like rock stars after they won the GISA AA state championship over the weekend.

The Lady Wildcats were honored during the school's annual winter sports assembly this morning in Camilla and they are getting invited to a number of civic events.

Westwood beat defending AA state champion Gatewood in the semifinals and then knocked off four time state champion Arlington Christian in overtime to win their first state championship.

It was an unlikely run for a team that graduated five seniors from last year's team but this squad came together at the right time of the season.

"I feel like the third time is the charm. This team we really worked really hard for it. I think all the hard work for the last three years really paid off," said forward Ivy Foister.

"We had new people this year. We just all started learning how to play with each other. Learning about each other and we just got better as the year went on," said guard Rachel Harrell.

"I have always heard coaches talk about teams peaking at the right time. I have always kind of wondered if there was some myth to that. As we ran into the region tournament, I really felt like they were starting to peak," said head coach Jenni Smith.

Westwood players Callie Smith, Rachel Harrell and Morgan Singleton were named all-state players and Jenni Smith GISA AA state coach of the year.
