Honolulu, HI (HPU)- Skye Savini scored a game high 18 points in
22 minutes as the Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (17-6, 13-4) defeated
Chaminade (1-21, 1-16) 83-56.The victory, coupled with a Grand Canyon loss
earlier in the day, clinched the number one seed for the Sea Warriors the
inaugural PacWest tournament.
The Sea Warriors scored early and often jumping out to a
commanding
41-25 lead in the first half. HPU finished the half
shooting 50 percent (15-30) from the floor including 45.5 percent (5-11) from
three-point range.
With the 15 point halftime lead the HPU starters would
play sparingly in the second half as 12 different Sea Warriors registered
double-digit minutes. Freshman Veanne Navarro came off the bench to finish with
10 points on four of five shooting while Shianne Solomon came off the bench to
add eight.
Senior Melody Ladrido scored 12 points in the final
regular season game of her career and commented about her team securing the
number one seed in the inaugural PacWest tournament, "We played really well
tonight and are happy about the seed, but we are still getting better.
We haven't peaked yet. Our season is not over."
Head Coach Reid Takatsuka shared a similar sentiment,
"The number one seed is nice, and I am extremely proud of our team, but we are
taking it one game at a time."
With the first round bye, the Sea Warriors will take the
first day of the PacWest tournament off and await the winner of the #4/#5
matchup.
The Sea Warriors are scheduled to tip on Friday, March
8th at 3:00 PM PST.
