18th Annual Sacred Hearts Academy Science Symposium for Girls

(Hawaii News Now) - The Sacred Hearts Academy Science Symposium for Girls consists of 18 hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics workshops facilitated by local professionals.  Workshop leaders include a nutrition educator, Tripler Army Medical Center Chief of Pediatric Surgery, a wildlife biologist,  pharmacist, and a maritime archaeologist. Students select two sessions allowing them to freely explore potential careers. 

Examples of the workshops: 

  • Be a CSI in Training exploring DNA
  • Treasures of the Deep--underwater shipwrecks and underwater mapping
  • Lights! Camera! Action! creating a commercial
  • Practice suturing and sewing surgeon-style using real medical instruments
  • Write! Create! Animate! digitally
  • Fighting Extinction endangered species--how scientists monitor and measure
  • Nutrition starts with agriculture
  • Ice Cream Chemistry
  • Engineering cells what it takes to be a biologist
  • Wildlife biology--how biologists track birds and monitor their environment
  • Deciphering density--what floats your boat
  • Get moving with physical therapy and sports   

The Science Symposium's keynote address will be presented by Arizona based Dr. Julie T. Anné a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and inspirational speaker.  Born to teenaged parents in the inner city of Chicago, Dr. Anne's personal story of adversity and triumph over significant educational, financial and familial limitations is one of inspiration and encouragement.  Dr. Anné will address the students and parents in a keynote address "Listen to your Passion and Create Your Dreams" followed by a "For Parents Only" session offering techniques on building self-esteem in young women.
