KEALAKEHE, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Hawaii County police are asking for the public's help after a man was killed in an early morning hit-and-run accident on Hawaii island.
The accident, which occurred around 1 a.m., reportedly happened on Mamalahoa Highway between Haukapila Street and Hokukano Road in Kealakekua, about a mile north of the Kona Community Hospital.
Police say the man was walking north along the side of the highway when he was hit by a car traveling in the same direction
Mamalahoa Highway was closed in both directions as police officials investigated the accident.
Police are looking for a sedan with damage to the front end, hood and possibly the windshield.
Police are looking for any witnesses who may have seen either the crash or a suspicious vehicle with front end damage. Anyone with information is asked to call Big Island police at 808-326-4646, extension 229.
The male victim has not yet been identified.
