Byron's Drive-In closing doors for good Thursday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

For the past 47 years, Byron's Drive-In has been one of Hawaii's go-to comfort food spots.

Back in December, its landowner announced plans to re-develop the area, which means in three days, Byron's is opening its windows and firing up its grill for the last time.

"Many nights after a late night out on the town, this was the stop," said longtime customer Ramon Arjona III.

Arjona III and his friend have been coming to Byron's since it first opened. They are also one of hundreds of customers who've left messages of condolences on the restaurant's front window.

"The food has always been good," Arjona III said. "Everything has been great here and always at a good price. Even when you were a teenager, you could come here and still afford the hamburger and one soda and one bag fries."

Mark Nielsen has been eating at Byron's since he was five and says there'll never be another spot like it.

"Byron's is like a staple for Hawaii," Nielsen said. "If you come in and out of Hawaii, the first thing you do on the way to the airport or the way back is stop at Byron's and grab one teriyaki chicken plate."

The owners don't have any plans to re-locate the drive-in, which also leaves the fate of its 35 employees up in the air.

"They are getting stressed out because they don't know what they are going to be doing for the next part of their lives, but I think everybody will bounce back," said Byron's Drive-In general manager Ruth Arakaki."We have a lot of good staff that has a lot of job offers out there."

Until Byron's closes Thursday night at 10, Arakaki says customers can rest assured the food will be made with the same quality that kept the restaurant open for almost half a century.

"It's like all you have to do is get the last burger and french fries out and blend that shake and just hope everybody gets everything they want when they want it as fast as they can," Arakaki said. "That's what we are trying to do and hope that everybody has their last memory here a good one."
