LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police arrested a Makawao man in connection with a gruesome attack on a homeless woman in Lahaina.

Police say Calvin Borge, 49, was arrested after he attacked the 53-year-old woman at a party on Wainee Street.

According to statements, both the victim and Borge were carrying on a conversation prior to the assault.

Witnesses says Borge approached the victim from the rear, got the victim in a rear neck hold, and used an envelope opener that had a semi-serrated blade and "slit" the front portion of the victim's neck from left to right across her esophagus.

The woman was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center  and was later released in satisfactory condition.

On Tuesday, Borge was arrested and charged for attempted murder in the second degree.

The  attack was unprovoked as the Victim did not have any indication that she was about to be assaulted, and had barely known BORGE.

Borge is currently being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center with his bail set at $100,000.
