Wind advisory up, business down for water sports

Maunalua Bay is usually packed on a day like today. Instead, the parking lot is empty and boats are docked over at the Hawaii Kai Marina. With winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour, area businesses offering parasailing had no choice but to cancel for their customers' safety.

"Yesterday, because the wind was bad as well—we had 93 people that were canceled," said Kathy Takahashi, manager for Seabreeze Watersports. "Today the number was similar, and I don't even want to think about impact."

Hawaii Kai residents say conditions yesterday were much worse. According to eyewitnesses, a boat and the hydro hoist it was on were both ripped off the seawall and started floating away—and another bigger boat, still attached to its dock was also pushed out into the marina.

Several stores in the area had to turn costumers away Sunday – including Safeway & Longs—after high winds caused a major power outage.

"We were closed for about half the day, but today we are up and running," said Tyler Williams, a manager at Maile's Thai Bistro.  "It's a lot busier since the Holiday."

The wind was a boost – not a bust – for a few places, like Hawaii Water Sports Center, thanks to their banana boat and bumper tube rentals.

"We get a little affected by the winds but not too much," said manager, Wendy Darling.  "We went through about 70 people before Noon.  It was good – it was good business for us, surprisingly."

Local scuba businesses were also operating without interruption.

"It was a little rough out there, but for scuba once you're in the ocean it's calm and beautiful and you look up and you see that boat getting tossed around," said Pat Hallman, who is visiting from Minnesota.  "It was fun, it was great."

A high wind advisory is in place statewide through Tuesday morning. Water sports business owners say they're watching conditions carefully and taking it day by day—it's the price they pay for operating outdoors in paradise.
