HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

There were 1,881 new jobless claims last week across Hawaii, and 11,903 total claims when one adds claims by people who were already out of work, the state Department of Labor & Industrial Relations reported.

New claims are down about 7 percent from the same time last year, but rose from the week before by about 200 claims. Subtracting the increase in total claims from the number of new claims filed suggests that about 1,600 people found new work in the seven-day period ending last Sunday.

New claims rose on Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and in all three Oahu unemployment offices, but fell on the Big Island. There were 246 new claims in Hawaii County compared to 314 the week before, with declines in both the Kona and Hilo unemployment offices.

The nearly 12,000 total claims statewide included 644 agent claims, 60 of them first-timers. Agent claims are filed against other states by people who are now in Hawaii.
