LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 69 year-old bicyclist is in critical condition following a traffic collision this morning in Kekaha.
Kauai officials say at 7:35 a.m., police and firefighters responded to the scene of the crash on Kaumualii Highway, just west of the Akialoa Road junction.
According to a preliminary investigation, the Kekaha man was riding his bike on the westbound shoulder of the highway when he was struck from behind by a Ford pickup truck, also heading west.
The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the truck, age 33 of Koloa, was not injured.
Medics took the bicyclist to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in critical condition where he remains at this time.
Police closed the westbound lane of Kaumualii Highway for over two hours during the emergency response, while the eastbound lane remained open to alternating traffic flow.
Both lanes of the highway were reopened at 10:10 a.m.
