A 66-year-old man was seriously injured early Wednesday morning after he was hit by a car being driven by a police officer in front of the Honolulu Police Department headquarters on South Beretania Street.

Traffic update: Several Ewa-bound lanes of S. Beretania remain closed at this hour as police conduct an investigation; take an alternate route if possible.

The accident happened at around 4:45 a.m.

Paramedics say the vehicle, which HPD confirms was a subsidized police vehicle, was traveling at approximately 25 miles per hour when it hit the pedestrian.

Police at the scene say the pedestrian darted out onto roadway and had been seen wandering around the area prior to the accident.
