HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - By: Paolo DiGiovanni
Big Island police say a Hakalau woman was killed in a two-car crash on Akoni Puke Highway in the North Kohala District on Saturday.
Police say Theresa Doris Pacheco was driving south in a Hyundai two door sedan just before 3 p.m. when she swerved to avoid a car also heading in the southbound direction.
The Hyundai ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.
Pacheco, 49, was taken to the Kona Community hospital where she was pronounced dead just after 8 p.m.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved, however police do suspect speed was a factor in the crash.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the eighth traffic related fatality on the Big Island this year compared to one at the same time last year.
The other driver, a 62-year-old man from Atlanta, Georgia, was not hurt.
