Surfer who drowned in Hanalei waters identified

HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Kauai Police Department (KPD) identified 64-year-old Richard Proczka of Kilauea as the man who drowned in waters off Hanalei Bay on Saturday afternoon.

The Kilauea man became Kauai's fifth ocean drowning victim in 2013, and the sixth drowning of the year.

Shortly after 5 p.m., friends noticed that the victim's surfboard had drifted onto shore, but there was no sign of the surfer. After searching for about 30 minutes, the friends called 911 and reported him missing.

KPD and the Kauai Fire Department were alerted to a missing surfer at 5:43 p.m.

KFD's Air 1 was dispatched and spotted the body about 200 yards off shore at roughly 6:30 p.m. Lifeguards recovered the body and returned the victim to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

At the time the incident took place, Kauai's north and west facing shores were in a high surf warning.
