$10M amusement park proposed for Kakaako

Go kart racing, an indoor skydiving chamber and a wave pool are all part of a proposed $10 million amusement park planned for Kakaako.

Alii Enterprises unveiled its plans for the new park at the site of the long vacant lot on Ala Moana during a meeting held by the Hawaii Community Development Authority today.

Billy Balding, Alii's owner, said the project will create 35 to 45 jobs.

"It's going to invite everybody in here and provide jobs. It's going to clean up the area and it will also bring people to outskirting areas," Balding said.

Hawaii News Now spoke to several stakeholders in the Kakaako community and most said they generally supported the idea since the project fits in with the state's plans to turn the area into a meeting place for local residents.

"When people come down in this area, they're so close that they'll be able to stretch out and give some of the other people and shops the economic impact," Balding said.

The developer has set an ambitious timetable.

It hopes to open the park by June but still needs to finalize a lease with landowner, Kamehameha Schools and needs to get approval from the HCDA before it can break ground.

The 3-acre project is located at the makai side of Ala Moana at the corner of Ahui street.

Balding said the new project will also include a miniature golf course, a skate park and a Ferris Wheel for children.
