After years of waiting, St. Francis School showed off its long-awaited addition on campus today.  The campaign for the new facility started nearly seven years ago.  Through donations and fundraising, the school raised $4.5 million and started construction.

Head of School, Sister Joan of Arc Souza, said that every little bit helped.  Whether it was a donation of $100 or $1000, they all helped make it happen.

"The music and athletic center portion of the structure, we got a million dollars from Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation," Sister Joan said.  "The alumni, they donated a lot."

The St. Francis School Gym and the Clarence T.C. Ching Music and Athletic Center will take the place of the Troubadome, a tent-like structure that housed a practice court that has been used by the school's teams since 2006.  The tent, which was torn down at the beginning of this year's season, did not host league games as the new gym will.

The complex is approximately 17,000 square feet which includes a collegiate size basketball court, weight rooms and a multi-purpose room.  This will be the first time that the students will have locker rooms and showers as well.

"The girls will have volleyball in here.  Boys volleyball, girls volleyball.  And who knows.  Liturgies, school assemblies, all kinds of things," Sister Joan said.

The multi-purpose room will be used for school related functions as well as primarily being used as a band room.

The grand-opening is Tuesday night when the undefeated St. Francis boys basketball team play for their second consecutive ILH Division 2 title against University High School.
