IRVINE, Calif. – (Hawaii Athletics) After helping the University of Hawai'i to a pair of come-from-behind road
wins, Christian Standhardinger was
named the Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week. It is the first Big
West honor for the native of Munich, Germany and the second for a Rainbow
Warrior this year, joining freshman Brandon Jawato who was honored
on Jan. 7.
Standhardinger averaged 20.5 ppg and 9.0 as UH grabbed a pair of road wins at
UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. The 6-8 juinor forward recorded his
eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds to help UH
rally from an 11-point second-half hole and beat UC Riverside, 72-68. He made
9-of-16 shots from the floor and his free throw with six seconds left helped
seal the win, UH's first-ever in Riverside.
Two night later, he helped spearhead another road win, scoring a team-high 18
points, while adding eight rebounds and four steals as UH overcame a 12-point
second-half deficit in a 77-75 win at Cal State Fullerton. Along with his
31-point, 16-rebound game at UCSB last week, Standhardinger has helped UH win
three straight road games for the first time in nine years. He currently leads
the team in scoring (16.0 ppg), steals (29) and double-doubles (8).
UH is now 7-4 in conference action and has taken over sole possession of third
place in the Big West. After playing four straight games on the road, UH
returns home for a showdown with league leading Long Beach State on Thursday,
Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
