Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is reminding residents that the city's Chinese New Year Celebration kicks off today in Chinatown and is free and open to the public.
He also warned motorists who are not attending the festival to avoid congestion in the area, especially with First Friday happening at the same time tonight. He also advised bus riders that routes in the area will be altered during the festival.
The following streets will be closed from 5:30 p.m. tonight through 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night:
- Pauahi Street: between River and Bethel Streets
- Maunakea Street and Smith Street: between South Beretania Street and North Nimitz Highway
- Hotel Street: between Richards Street and River Street
Tonight, there will also be temporary closures of the following streets to accommodate lion dances:
- King street between River Street and Bethel Street
- Nuuanu Avenue and Bethel Street between South Beretania and Nimitz Highway.
