6.7 earthquake hits Santa Cruz Islands, no tsunami

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Santa Cruz Islands on Friday, 239 miles east from Kira Kira, Solomon Islands.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was at a depth of 21 miles.

Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.

The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
