PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - All Ewa-bound lanes of the H-1 freeway between the Pearl City and Waipahu off-ramps were completely shut down on Thursday night as police investigated the death of a man who died after jumping out of a moving vehicle.
The Honolulu Police Department advised motorists at around 10:10 p.m. that the freeway would remain closed for several hours as they investigated. City traffic management cameras showed all westbound freeway traffic being diverted to the Waipahu off-ramp.
All lanes of the H-1 in the Ewa-bound direction were reopened around 1:40 a.m. on Friday.
According to police, the victim, a 33-year-old man who suffers from mental health and drug abuse issues, was being driven by his wife to a treatment center in Ewa Beach when he became upset and started trying to get out of the car.
The man's wife reportedly tried to stop him by locking the doors and holding on to him, but he overpowered her and jumped out of the Honda Civic the two were riding in.
Police say that once the man hit the road, another vehicle ran him over, failing to stop and help. Police say they have opened a negligent homicide and failure to render aide investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information on the whereabouts of the suspect vehicle involved, possibly a dark-colored compact car that may have damage to its front end or undercarriage, is asked to contact police.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
