High surf warning issued, large surf builds

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service says a storm in the North Pacific has generated a large northwest swell that is arriving Thursday afternoon and will continue to build tonight.

The high surf warning is in effect for the north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and the north facing shores of Maui.

An advisory will also go into effect by tonight for the west facing shores of the Big Island.

The warning expires 6 p.m. Friday.

* Surf, north and west facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui...surf rising to 20 to 28 feet by tonight. West facing shores Oahu and Molokai...surf rising to 15 to 20 feet by tonight.

* Impacts...high...expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches...very strong breaking waves and strong long shore and rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
