NAZARE, PORTUGAL (HawaiiNewsNow) - Big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara from Oahu's North Shore may have broken his own world record ride.

McNamara claims he has surfed a wave reported to be around 100 feet high. McNamara surfed the behemoth on Monday off the coast of Nazare, Portugal.

Officials with the Guinness Book of World Records will have to verify the wave's height.

In 2011, McNamara surfed a wave that was initially thought to be 90-feet but through photos the wave was determined to be 77.7559 feet high.

"Thank you for all your support. It means the world to me. Today was an awesome day and so fun to be out there," tweeted McNamara. "Oh how I love Nazare."

A photo reportedly showing McNamara on the 100 foot monster has gone viral. According to the image was captured by European photographer Tó Mané.

"I feel very blessed and I feel that we've achieved everything we wanted to do with Portugal and Nazare, especially. We've been planning this for a while and it feels really amazing to share with everybody," he told

The surfing website also says that scientists from a Portuguese university estimate the wave at 111.5 feet.  The scientists used software that used McNamara's surfboard as a reference to the whole wave face.
