Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi visits Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Peace leader Aung San Suu Kyi is visiting Hawaii this week for an ongoing initiative called "Pillars of Peace Hawai'i: Building Peace on a Foundation of Aloha."

The program, launched in April 2012, has a goal to talk about how local compassion, diversity and Hawaiian culture play into world peace.  Suu Kyi Is known for her political activism in Myanmar and is a founding member of the "National League for Democracy."

Bishop Museum welcomed Suu Kyi today with a tour to give a deeper understanding of Hawaii's culture and history. The museum also presented her with a manele a'e (Hawaiian soapberry) seed lei made by local artist Marques Hanalei Marzan from a tree on the museum grounds. She also shared ideas on the law, tourism development and political issues.

She'll talk with local students on a livestream starting tomorrow at 9 a.m. on the Pillars of Peace website at Pillars of Peace. The talk will also be available for playback after the event.
