While asbestos is no longer used in manufacturing, some individuals who worked around the substance three or four decades ago are now receiving mesothelioma diagnoses, said attorney Hansen Dirani, who encourages those affected to speak with a legal professional.
Tulsa, Oklahoma (PRWEB) January 23, 2013
Hansen Dirani, of Hansen Dirani & Associates, said today his law firm is helping individuals and families find the top mesothelioma lawyers so they can get experienced representation for their asbestos claims.
Mesothelioma is a virulent form of cancer linked to asbestos exposure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While asbestos is a mineral that is no longer mined in the United States, there is a substantial amount of the dangerous substance remaining in buildings, according to the CDC. The agency states that about 1.3 million construction workers and general industry workers are potentially being exposed to asbestos.
Dirani said his firm is currently reviewing potential asbestos lawsuits for individuals who have worked in a variety of occupations, including pipe fitters, shipyard workers, auto mechanics, sheet metal workers, construction workers, welders and electricians.
While asbestos has not been used in construction or manufacturing for decades, it can take a long time – 20 to 40 years – for a worker to develop mesothelioma after exposure, according to the CDC.
“The annual number of mesothelioma deaths is still increasing, and future cases will continue to reflect the extensive past use of asbestos,” the CDC states on its website. “New cases also might result through occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos during remediation and demolition of existing asbestos in buildings if controls are insufficient to protect workers and the surrounding community.”
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 3,000 different commercial products contain asbestos, including older plastics, paper products, brake linings, floor tiles and textile products. The EPA states that many heavy industrial products including sealants, cement pipe, cement sheets and insulation contain asbestos.
According to the EPA, between 1940 and 1980, about 27 million Americans were exposed to significantly to asbestos on their jobs.
“While individuals may have been exposed to asbestos many years ago, some people are just now beginning to receive a mesothelioma diagnosis,” Dirani said. “It’s not unusual for someone to be diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer three or four decades after exposure.”
Victims of mesothelioma or their families are encouraged to talk to an experienced asbestos injury attorney to learn about their rights, Dirani said. For more information, call 877-583-0700.
