NC WEATHER: Better rain chance, not as hot Wednesday

Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The hottest temperatures of the week hit North Carolina Tuesday, but we may not be able to use the word cool until next week.

Tuesday was again the hottest day since mid-July as high temperatures soared into the 90s.  The Triangle made it up to 96 while Fayetteville made it up to 98.  Both spots had heat index values at or above 100.  The normal high this time of year is 86.

Overnight will continue to be warm and muggy with a few showers and storms possible mainly before midnight with a Wednesday morning low down to 72.

Wednesday and Thursday won't be as hot, but highs will still be in the lower 90s and above normal for this time of year. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy each day with slightly better rain and storm chances. Highs on Wednesday will be around 93 and 91 on Thursday.

Friday will still be hot with highs around 91 and continued small chances of afternoon showers and storms.

This weekend will have a few changes.  Saturday will still be hot with a high near 91 and a few storms possible.  Sunday however, could have a cold front move through bringing a better chance of rain and highs in the upper 80s.  More seasonal temperatures are possible next Monday.

The tropics remain rather quiet as we head into one of the busiest months during the hurricane season.  Tropical Storm Dolly strengthened overnight in the southern Gulf of Mexico.  This storm is not expected to impact the United States, moving west into Mexico Wednesday.
