NEAR THE PHILIPPINES (CNN) – The U.S.S. Guardian, a Navy minesweeper, is still grounded on the Tubbataha Reef after running into the reef Thursday.
The vessel's grounding has damaged the reef, the U.S. Navy acknowledged, but rough seas and hazardous weather have hindered efforts to survey the site, about 130 kilometers east-southeast of the Philippines' Palawan Island.
Vice Admiral Scott Swift apologized on a Navy website for any damage the ship has caused to the reef.
He also promised stepped-up efforts prevent further damage in an area teeming with endangered marine life.
The navies for the U.S. and the Philippines report no signs of an oil leak in the water.
The incident remains under investigation.
