Volunteers from Malama Maunalua and Power Yoga Hawaii teamed up Saturday to pull leather mudweed from the waters off Kuliouou Beach Park.

It's been part of a decades-long battle with the mudweed. A 2010 projected netted three million pounds of the invasive species from Maunalua Bay. Organizers say continued efforts are needed.

"This is community-based, community-driven," said Rae DeCoito, executive director of Malama Maunalua. "Every pound that we remove is done by community. In many cases, we'll get organizations that want to come out and experience this, whether it's educational, good fun, or community service."

A group of students from Farrington High School also joined in the effort to pull up the mudweed.

Malama Maunalua was organized six years ago, and receives state and federal funding to clean up the area. It holds such cleanups about twice a month.

The group also has started land-based projects to get rid of the sediment that is deposited in the bay, allowing the mudweed to grow.
