KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Tourists on a boat off Hawaii's Big Island got the experience of a lifetime. Two full-grown Humpback whales brushed up against their inflatable boat, and the close encounter was caught on camera.
Over a period of at least ten minutes on Jan. 10, the whales were seen swimming gracefully around the 24-foot long zodiac boat. At times, the female Humpback whale seemed to be using the boat as a backscratcher, said Maria Harvey, crew member for Captian Zodiac Rafting Expeditions.
"It was absolutely incredible," Harvey said.
She recorded the encounter off Kona using an underwater HD GoPro II camera mounted to a pole as tourists on board watched in awe. Some were heard in the video asking if they were in any danger, but the crew quickly calmed their fears.
Thousands of whales flock to Hawaiian waters from late November to mid-April.
