Lihue sugar mill smokestack comes down

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The smokestack that was part of 1 of Hawaii's largest sugar companies is no longer.

The Garden Island says the smokestack, which had stood watch of the Kauai town of Lihue for almost 65 years, came down Tuesday.

The National Park Service said in a report that the Lihue Plantation Company smokestack was built in 1948 and was 167 feet tall. It helped make the plant into 1 of the largest in Hawaii, with more cane produced at the mill than any other in the state.
