MOILIILI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Roads were closed and an apartment building was evacuated Tuesday morning after a unit in the high-rise tower broke out in flames in Moiliili.
The fire was first reported at just before 2:40 a.m. in unit 817 of the Marco Polo Condos on Kapiolani Boulevard.
11 fire crews and 50 firefighters responded to the fire, which burned part of a building that was built in the 1970s that did not have water sprinklers inside, according to to the Honolulu Fire Department.
Firefighters had reportedly extinguished the blaze by 3:39 a.m., but say several units both above and below the unit that caught fire were affected.
Four people were inside the apartment at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported during the blaze, according to the Honolulu Fire Department. The Red Cross has responded to the scene of the fire to assist those affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though an HFD spokesperson said it appears the fire was accidental.
