Report of man chasing student triggers lockdown at Big Island schools

WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two schools in Waimea on the Big Island were sent into lockdown on Friday morning as police investigated reports of a suspicious person on campus who was chasing a 10-year-old boy.

Police say multiple officers were looking for the suspect, who was spotted near the campus just before 8 a.m., and students were all kept in their classrooms.

The lockdown was lifted about 35 minutes later when a police investigation revealed the male suspect was a relative of the boy, and the reported chase was a friendly game.

Another student did not recognize the boy's relative, and had reported the chase to authorities, saying there was a stranger on campus.
