HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A handgun that a passenger in Honolulu tried to sneak onto a flight using a hollowed-out book was one of 1,543 firearms that were discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country in 2012, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

In a post on their website, the TSA revealed a list of dangerous items that were found by officials during screenings of more than 637 million passengers in 2012. In addition to the firearms, TSA officers found a live grenade, several different types of explosive devices, a grenade launcher, and a watch resembling a piece of an improvised explosive device.

One passenger in Providence took apart a gun and tried to conceal the pieces in three stuffed animals in his carry-on luggage, and another in Portland put a pistol into a potted plant, presumably in an effort to get it past security. A .22 caliber magazine was discovered wrapped in aluminum foil inside a DVD player in Fresno, and another gun inside a book, this one a BB gun, was found in Fargo.

Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International, the world's busiest airport, ranked tops in the nation for firearms discoveries with 95. In all, guns were found at almost 200 different airports in 2012.

TSA officials also posted a list of unusual items that were found at airports, including bear mace, a spear gun, dead venomous snakes, a chastity belt, a ‘shocking amount' of stun guns, a gassed up chainsaw, and a marijuana filled grenade.
