The Patriarch of the Rainbow Wahine softball program will be sticking around for five more years. Head Coach Bob Coolen's contract extension has been finalized. It is a three-year extension that will be added on to the two years he had remaining, meaning he will be under contract through the 2017 season. It will be retroactive to July 1 2012.
Original discussions were for a one year extension with an undisclosed pay increase, but the coach wanted years more than dollars. "I wasn't interested in the monetary aspect, I was interested in the longevity."
Coolen had received calls from other schools, but wanted to stay with Hawaii. "People had called me, which was flattering, but this is where my family is and this is where I wanted to stay."
Coolen is in his 24th year with the program, 22nd as head coach. Though he'll be 59 at its end, Coolen stated he isn't looking to retire after this five year stretch.
