Former Kahuku standout kicked off team for road rage

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has kicked a linebacker off the football team after his conviction for knocking a motorist unconscious in a bout of road rage.

Whittingham issued a statement saying he's very disappointed with Afa Bridenstine.

The coach dismissed Bridenstine Monday, the same day he was sentenced to 18 months of probation in 2nd District Court. The player was ordered to take an anger management class. He pleaded guilty to assault recently for punching a 20-year-old man in September.

Bridenstine told police the man tried to run him off the road. He confronted the motorist in a Centerville parking lot, knocking him out in his driver's seat.

Bridenstine is a redshirt freshman linebacker from Kahuku, Hawaii. He had yet to take the field for the team.

The Standard-Examiner reported Bridenstine told a judge the incident taught him to not take matters into his own hands.
