(HawaiiNewsNow) - As millions of Americans are in the midst of holiday indulgence time, two Honolulu families have been adding "getting fit" to their seasonal to do list. Through their persistence and determination, the Bonds & Takinishis families earned their way to compete as two of the five finalists in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) 3rd Annual Triple Play Fit Family Challenge finale.
The Honolulu families were selected from more than 200 families across the U.S. who participated in the contest. The semi-finalists were chosen for their commitment to improving their diet, increasing their daily physical activity and spending more time together as a family. The Bonds family has two children, 10-year old Rebeccah and 12-year old Hannah and the Takinishis family has two children, 9-year old Lauryn and 11-year old Kylee who attend Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii. Experts say families that exercise together tend to build better relationships with each other, while putting them on the path for better health for the future.
Both Honolulu families and the other three family finalists are preparing to head to Los Angeles, where they will meet BGCA alum and three-time Track & Field Olympic Medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee as they face off against each other at the finale event on Saturday, January 12th. They'll be required to navigate through a challenging obstacle course, participate in a family talent show and compete in a quiz show about healthy food choices. One winning family will receive an all-expense paid family vacation to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, along with gift baskets filled with prizes to help them continue their fitness goals.
